M.A.D, Ahmedabad

M.A.D. by Tomato’s is a standalone restaurant with an extensive menu that covers Indian, Pan-Asian, Italian, American, Mexican, Goan, Parsee and fusion cuisines.

DÉCOR

M.A.D. stands for Modern American Diner and, like Tomato’s by the same promoter, this one too has walls spanned by American legends including Hollywood stars, rock n roll and jazz musicians, movies, brands and events that shaped the history of America from the 1950s to more recent times.

Note the posters that show the cultural diversity of America from Muhammad Ali who is one of the most legendary African American boxers to Bruce Lee who influenced martial arts in America.

The interiors reflect the evolution of the American diner from the checkered floor, neon lights, stainless steel booths and bold red upholstered seating near the entrance to the less flashy and more contemporary flooring and fabrics inside. The bar along the last wall has props and posters showing America’s iconic beverage brands.

FOOD

M.A.D. has retained most of the favourites of Tomato’s patrons like the skillets, stir-fries, kebabs, biryanis, North Indian mains, old fashioned fish and chips, Mexican hot pot, pizzas and Italian dishes, with the addition of Goan, Parsee and some new house specials.

Their new house special starter is the Mexican Kabob – a platter of paneer or chicken marinated with casabele chilli sauce and Mexican style seasoning, a good choice for those who like spicy food. The house special soup is the Khow Seuy which comes with chicken, seafood or veggies.

The restaurant does a good Pan Grilled Fish with a choice of Tomato Garlic Sauce, Basil Pesto and Olives Sauce, Lemon Butter and Bell Pepper Sauce, and M.A.D. has also added Fish Harissa which comes in the classic Moroccan marinade with an orange chilly reduction and a salad on the side.

The USP of M.A.D. is that it has introduced Goan and Parsee dishes that are not available in most other restaurants in Ahmedabad. If you are looking for a one dish meal look no further than the Dhansak, which has soft veg/non-veg kebabs, a Parsee dal cooked with vegetables, chicken or mutton, rice and salad. They also serve a pretty good Sali Boti/Murg (former with mutton and latter with chicken) with potato straws. The Prawns Balchao is a fairly authentic take on the Goan classic with a tangy taste and the chilly factor just a little toned down for the local palate. They also offer Chicken/Vegetable Vindaloo. Since eggs are quite popular in Ahmedabad, it is heartening to see Parsee egg dishes like Tamato par Idu and Khara Papeta par Idu on the menu, and both are pretty close to how you would get them in a Parsee house.

Tomato’s classics like Apple Pie and Blackforest Pastry are good desserts, and those with a love for chocolate could opt for the Dessert Skillet which has assorted desserts of the day topped with ice-cream and chocolate sauce.
