River View, Ahmedabad

River View is the multi-cuisine restaurant of the Sarovar Portico Hotel.

DÉCOR

Riverview is a neatly laid out restaurant with tables set around a chandelier-lit buffet area in the centre.

The restaurant has a large window that brings in a pleasant view of the lawns, though the river view for which it is named is largely blocked by new developments. The large window allows plenty of natural light to flow in by day and at night the lit up lawns can be seen if you take a window-side table. The hotel often stages barbecue nights at their lawn on winter weekends.

FOOD

River View is a good place for North Indian food and some western dishes like pastas, baked dishes, grilled chicken and fried fish. Since it is situated in a business hotel, a special feature of River View is that the chefs also make home-style vegetables, chicken or dal and even versions of comfort foods of various communities like Bengali fish curry or Parsee patrani machch for home sick travelers.

The strongest section of the menu is called From the Clay Oven and features a selection of tandoori kebabs and tikkas. They do excellent Paneer Tikka Tandoori, Makai Paneer Sheek, Shabnam Parloof (paneer and herb stuffed mushrooms), Ajwaini Fish Tikka, Chicken Malai Kebab and Chakori Chicken Kebab. The Boti Kebabs are very meaty and spicy, and only recommended for those who really like a strong taste of mutton. They also make Tandoori Chicken Chaat for those who prefer chaats. They have the usual range of North Indian mains like Butter Chicken, Dhaniya Chicken, Kheema Mutter, Paneer Lababdar, Malai Kofta and Dal Makhani, all of which are good.

The western food is also pretty good but do not look at authenticity as the names of the dishes do not always match with what you would get in the respective countries under the same heading. For instance, the chef’s take on the Poulet Piccata is a superbly grilled chicken with a nice tasting stuffing of spinach, mushroom and cheese, accompanied by a sauce, and crispy vegetables neatly plated alongside. Similarly Pescado Veracruzana has been converted by the chef into a dish with a well-grilled fish accompanied by parsley potatoes, and a rather strong tasting orange or kiwi butter sauce. Both come with seasoned rice on the side. The chefs’ special is the Chicken Stroganoff which is made to order and not on the regular menu.

The restaurant’s signature dessert is the fragrant Stuffed Gulab Jamun, and they also do fairly good Gajjar Halwa or Malpua at times. The Crème Caramel when they have it is also okay.

PLUS AND MINUS

River View is a good place to visit for comfort foods and popular items. The Chinese food is best avoided.

Meal for two: Rs 1200
